Nightclubs and discotheques are hotbeds of contemporary culture: since the early twentieth century they have been centres of the avant-garde that question social norms and experiment with other realities, merging interior and furniture design, graphics and art with sound, light, fashion and special effects into a modern Gesamtkunstwerk. The catalogue is the first book to survey the design history of the nightclub, from the Italian clubs of the 1960s created by the protagonists of Radical Design to Studio 54, the Palladium in New York and OMA’s Ministry of Sound II in London, with films, vintage photographs, posters, flyers and fashion.
