Vientre (La Mixteca, Oaxaca, 2013–2018) delves into the links and contrasts between beauty and cruelty, between the various facets of appetite, in the context of the goat slaughter, where the living dead, pain and affection occur in the same instant and in the same territory. Here is a land that is still walked, beaten and sown; the roots intermingle and quarrel between the past and a new time. Vientre is that cave, that lair where everything is unleashed, where we return, a damp home where people and animals cohabit and share as much as habit, a field that will soon be another. The desert advances, survival changes form as bodies do. And while they dry in the sun, the photographer immerses herself and waits for the squeal, for movement and stillness in the open air, under tile or cane, so close to the limits of being, the extremes raw.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
