This series is not exactly a series but a combination of moments shared with women in different places around the world, women who live from dance and their bodies. Women who fly in search of freedom and of their destiny, who struggle close to the ground, to the movement of their bodies, in a continuous flow that takes them around the world: a new species of migratory bird that crosses seas and oceans before reaching dry land; some stay on an island, perhaps in Spain, in Ibiza, for an indefinite period, others travel as far as Reno, in the USA, on a journey that takes them to and from Madrid, to an island that can only be called disillusion. Siwah is also, or above all, the story of the vision of a travelling woman who is a migratory bird, searching for a land that no longer exists and becoming the bodies and customs of other women: those who work and half live in a clandestine Arabic dance venue, similar to a brothel; a meeting place, and also a luxury sex shop on an island, because islands are good stopping points for birds on a short flight. Photographers and dancers met at a given moment, in different places, to recharge and recover, take some pictures, dance eternal dances and continue the journey that leads to the same place: a destination inside ourselves.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
