A photobook made in connection with the Japan-China-Korea contemporary theatre collaboration SHUGEN ~Celebration/Expression~, produced by the Aomori Museum of Art and the Japan Foundation with actors, dancers and musicians from the three countries. Two photographers, the Japanese Risaku Suzuki and the Korean Kim Jiyoun, travelled to places connected with the characters, Shanghai, Suzhou, Seoul, Sendai, Tono and Aomori, and made the pictures before the performance. Using an approach borrowed from road movies, the images depict each character's personal history and family relationships, and ultimately where they are headed having been born in each country, woven into the landscapes where they lived. They shift between story and photograph, draw in mysteries rather than explanations, and became indispensable to the production of the new play, following the inner journey of its three protagonists, whose voices were divided between this shore and the other by the tsunami.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
