Graduation photographs that never appear in a school yearbook, made by the fashion designer Keisuke Kanda (clothes) and the photographer Masashi Asada together with ordinary high school students. In February 2011 the two began a project they called the graduation photograph homework: they called for volunteers, Kanda made one-day outfits in the style of makeshift uniforms, and Asada photographed them, travelling to the many towns where the students waited. Each photograph, the one image that could only have been made at that moment, appears with the students' essays and the objects that hold their memories. Like graduation itself, a high schooler's heart is always at a crossroads from which there is no going back; the collaboration ties clothes to feelings and past to future, and is also a kind of fashion photography made by people's hearts. The book also includes a free-research section on graduation photographs by former high school students. Asada writes that to be photographed with the homework of putting oneself and one's thoughts into the picture requires resolve, and that behind the students' gaze he kept seeing himself at seventeen.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
