Essay by Natsuki Ikezawa
Made for the Sapporo International Art Festival 2014 (19 July to 28 September, with Ryuichi Sakamoto as guest director), this book gathers new photographs that Taiji Matsue made of Sapporo. Known for collecting the surface of the earth in many places with an all-over viewpoint and a precise technique, Matsue turns to the festival's theme, the city and nature, and captures it from both the sky and the ground. The result is a three-dimensional structure of images, together with the changing seasons of Sapporo from summer to winter. The book includes an essay by Natsuki Ikezawa, "Sky of Sapporo, Sky of the World". He recalls the ancient ceremony of kunimi ("land viewing"), in which people climbed a mountain before planting to look down on their fields and praise the land, praying for a good harvest: looking was an act of praise and benediction. Learning this, he writes, he understood the meaning hidden in the photobook.
