Shinryo Saeki's first photobook, a selection from the ten years of pictures he made since he started photographing. Aisatsu means 'greetings' in Japanese, and the book presents itself quite boldly. Its cover and binding are bright red and white, colours with a specific meaning in Japanese culture: life and death. The motif is reflected throughout the book, not only in images with strong red and white elements but also in the juxtaposition of images dealing with these themes: a baby crawls through a house on one page while a funeral procession walks by on the next. Saeki's gaze is turned quietly and equally on every scene of daily life, and the photographs take in all the joy, love, surprise and sadness of this world; a generous sense of impermanence runs through the work and wraps the viewer gently. Perhaps because he is a monk, Saeki is able to think clearly, and at times almost humorously, about these questions, and he shows a light, human touch in dealing with such heavy topics. The colour photographs in Aisatsu are a refreshing look at life and death in Japan.
