The long-awaited sequel to the best-selling Asadake (The Asada Family), which sold some 15,000 copies. The Asada family of four became five when his brother married and six when a baby was born, and New Life expresses, in the form of a family album, new family members, new lives and new photographs. Its pages are printed to look like a regular photo album, and the book follows real time, from the wedding ceremony in Hawaii to the birth and growth of the baby. Masashi Asada's trademark is the highly staged photograph in which he, his brother and his parents act out an often comic scene for the camera, but this time the subject matter is less conceptual and he moves freely between staged pictures and candid family snapshots, until the boundary between them melts away. The book was made by the whole family, with the mother's pressed flowers beside the baby's snapshots, a new character drawn by his brother and a handwritten chronology of the Asada family by his father. A large section is devoted to his brother's wedding and to the newborn cousin. At the end of the book Asada prints his own mobile phone number and invites readers to contact him if they would like to have their family portrait taken, a friendly gesture that fits the light approach he takes when photographing his own family.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
