A special volume published in conjunction with the 2010 exhibition at the Yokohama Museum of Art, made to commemorate the end of Polaroid film. The Goodbye Polaroid show was launched by Tama Art University after production stopped in 2008 and toured Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka as a wake for the format; when the news came that the film would be produced again, it restarted at Yokohama as a celebration of new possibilities and encounters. The book shows Polaroids by 126 participants, photographers, artists, researchers and students, among them some of the most influential photographers in Japan, such as Hiroshi Sugimoto, Nobuyoshi Araki and Daido Moriyama, and adds four essays reflecting on the format. Although it eventually came to light that Polaroid film would be produced by a third party, the book remains an important meditation on the way this technology has affected photography. Marvelling at how so many different photographers could be brought together without a hitch, the critic Kotaro Iizawa concludes that some strange and astounding magnetic field must be acting on the movement surrounding Polaroid photography.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
