Nestled beneath the busy highway leading to the Golden Gate Bridge lies the Presidio Pet Cemetery, a half-acre burial ground in San Francisco, a city where dogs outnumber children. Established in the 1950s for the pets of military families stationed at the Presidio, the cemetery has quietly endured more than seventy years of urban change. Hidden from view, it remains a rare place where the bond between people and their animals is preserved in handmade headstones, affectionate names and heartfelt epitaphs; walking among the graves you meet Smoochy, Schmelly, Saucy Wilbur and hundreds of others. Weathered by time and surrounded by wildflowers and overgrown brush, the cemetery survives through generations of volunteers, yet its future remains uncertain.
Lyam Bewry documents this overlooked cultural landmark and the deeply personal stories it holds. Through photographs of the cemetery and its memorials, the publication reflects on love, remembrance and the ways people honour the animals that shape their lives, while contributing to the preservation of a unique piece of San Francisco's cultural history.
