The magnetic pull of Tokyo draws youth from across Japan. Some arrive for school, graduates in black suits flood in for interviews with big companies, and others, like Ikuro Suzuki, arrive with a camera around the neck and two cardboard boxes under the arm and check into a dormitory for itinerant labourers. He had left his mother and brother in a one-room apartment and a life of dusk-to-dawn work in a bar in Shizuoka, and soon found work as a scaffold erector, joining a crew of rough men doing dangerous labour suspended above the skyline. In reaction to this pressure cooker of out-of-town loneliness, male camaraderie and physical exhaustion he points his camera along a straight line of vision, again and again, at his co-workers and friends, at skyscraper views and cramped Tokyo bars, at the food and the women that make up his life. Thousands of colour prints weave a rich personal tale that he physically shaped into hand-made photobooks, work for which he received the Grand Prize of the Canon New Cosmos of Photography in 2013. This is the first of twelve books by Suzuki, an ambitious project to publish one new volume each month in 2016.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
