A photobook on Hirabayashi Metal, a company in Okayama at the head of Japan's resource industry, which regenerates discarded things into resources of almost 100 percent purity. Not a single nail is overlooked: sites where waste is processed are usually surrounded by high walls and invisible to us, and inside, machines and people thoroughly dismantle, sort and process an enormous variety of discarded objects, in what goes beyond disposal into another kind of manufacturing. Photographer Takeshi Dodo stepped into the factory and found a rare scene, grand, meticulous, artistic and down-to-earth. Industries that make and sell products are called arterial industries, while those that process waste into raw materials are called venous industries, and every frame holds the pride of the venous industry and its role in a society that circulates its resources. A company employee says the aim is to bring washing machines back into washing machines and refrigerators back into refrigerators. Founded in 1956 as a one-man business, the company recycles home appliances, metals and non-metals with about 300 staff, and received a Good Design Award in 2016.
