Over five years Giljung Yoon visited more than 800 places all over Korea to photograph stone statues and stone totem poles, less to archive them than to discern something of the lives of his ancestors through their faces and forms. He turned not to the standardised statues of royal tombs from the Unified Silla period but to the stone figures that guard the tombs of the sadaebu officials of the Joseon period (1392-1910), drawn by their faces rather than by the rank of the owner or the date. Overcoming the hierarchy of the figures, set by their masters' status, all are shot at the same size and against the same background. He reads the stone guardians beside tombs as carrying the human desire to live for ever: dead, they stand outside the grave with a wish for immortality, carved from granite, the hardest of stones, ideal for wishing infinite time, yet condemned like all things to be worn away by wind and snow.
