Winner of the 17th 1_WALL Grand Prix, Yu Kawasaki photographs his own family and the landscape of Nagahama, the city in Shiga where he was born and raised, over some six years, taking as motifs two subjects worn smooth by familiarity, the family photograph and the hometown photograph, and trying to push beyond them to create wholly new forms of both. There is no picture of husband and wife side by side and no family portrait gathering everyone in a single frame: each person mostly appears alone, and only now and then does a sister stand beside another. Extreme close-ups strip away the relationships and distances we usually associate with the word family, yet the excessive nearness conveys the size and unknowability of a family inseparable from his own existence. Against it stands a hometown landscape far from intimacy or nostalgia, a suburban scenery, the known landscape that binds many of us today.
