Art direction by Ariko Inaoka
Ariko Inaoka's long-awaited photobook after SOL (2008): a series on twin sisters she met in Iceland and photographed every summer for seven years, from the age of nine to sixteen; the title comes from the sisters' names, Eagle and Raven. As they once said, they sometimes dream the same dream, and the two figures seem to resonate mysteriously; Inaoka brings out the presence of another self, at times through mirrors and water, while the simple costumes of the ballet they study and their choreographed gestures abstract it further. Unravelling in resonance with the land, sky and sea of Iceland, the self appears as part of nature, and through the twins the book describes the way life is everywhere and the space in which it dwells. It is wrapped in deep blue cloth, with photographs pasted in circles that recall heavenly bodies, no spine, and the colours of the stacked pages showing with the binding thread.
