Last portraits of things cast up on the shore and abandoned. Walking the coast of his native Miyazaki, Shinichiro Uchikura picked up what he found one by one, arranged it on a white cloth and photographed it: a huge amount of plastic, figures, ornaments, toys, carcasses of living things, objects that have finished their original role yet keep the traces of the human world, transformed by time and the environment into a new presence. Beyond the stretch of beach cleaned by government and volunteers lies the opposite world, where debris and jetsam are dumped and forgotten, tossed about by the waves of time and dried by the sun. Through dialogue with forgotten things, the book reflects society and the time borne by all things. In the words of the artist Michiko Kon on the obi, castaways are beautiful, poisonous and sad, and in black and white they seem to fall into a quiet sleep.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
