Book design by Yuri Uenishi
The long-awaited first photobook by Yuki Shimizu: a ten-year journey around water, in which layers of photographs and words raise a new landscape. It combines pictures of the waterside journey, tales of imaginary creatures that live in the intertidal zone, conversations with someone who comes to snatch people from the water, and images generated by negative film decomposed with mould and sea water. She photographed rivers where princesses who drowned themselves became dragon gods, ponds where sacrifices were made, a lake that purifies poison, rain-making festivals, people singing the joy of water, the ruins of an oasis town in Uzbekistan, the underground waters of Israel and a desert in New Mexico where an ancient lake dried up, while collecting folklore about dragon gods and records of floods and tsunamis and writing fiction inspired by them. The words are not a description but a re-telling of the landscape, adding to a photograph of the past the interference of time after the shot.
