Patrick Pound skirts the line between artist and pictorial treasure hunter: digging through online marketplaces, estate sales and flea markets, he has amassed more than 80,000 photographs, organised into 130 categories. L is for lonely, which follows his 2024 book Windows for Perimeter Editions, began as a drawer of prints in his studio and is now a book. It gathers photographs from defunct and dispersed cinema and newspaper archives, each containing the word lonely or loneliness, whether in a film title on the front of a picture or in the press agency text pasted on the back of a newspaper photograph, and every photograph is shown from both sides. Loneliness appears in animal and human form, in all kinds of people and places and in states of feeling, from a lonely lane where a kidnapping took place to a promotional still from The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner and a newspaper image of a drone over a lonely desert. The cover is a black-and-white press photograph of rows of chairs in a lounge with a seated man.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
