Speculative Ecology is a new critical essay by the philosopher Claire Colebrook, published in dialogue with the exhibition Syncretic Wilds: Phasmahammer and Natasha Tontey. It reopens ecology as a speculative question and challenges the assumption that nature, environment and humanity provide self-evident foundations for politics and ethics. Taking contemporary forms of ecological and political fundamentalism into account, Colebrook argues for worlds in which identities, environments and futures remain open to transformation. It belongs to Outbound: Essays in Circulation, an annual series co-published by Monash University Museum of Art and Perimeter Editions that takes the museum's exhibition program as a point of departure for broader social, cultural, political and philosophical arguments, grounded in the conditions of Australia and the Asia-Pacific. The cover is a black-and-white op-art pattern of horizontal stripes with an ornate round motif and the title running vertically.
