MADAME F. testifies to the graphic existence of a homonymous woman and her internment process into the Asylum of Geneva at the end of nineteenth century. In the form of an interposed dialogue, preserved by the same institutions that eventually committed her to a life-long hospitalization, the volume brings together the epistolary exchange between the woman and the Department of Justice and Police, currently held in the State Archives of Geneva. Madame F. gains archival traction at the intersection of memory and oblivion and within the interstices of two opposing discourses: the standardised one of the institutions; and Madame F.'s more spontaneous and subjective one. The dossier accentuates the disparity between the two parties while exposing Madame F.'s voice to an addressee different from the originally intended one. A contribution in the history of mental illness and microhistory.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
