Text by Christopher Bruno
With his second monograph, the musician and photographer Patrick Sansone collects 136 colour images made between the winter of 2019 and the summer of 2021. As his earlier 100 Polaroids showed, his eye has long been drawn to the detritus of small-town midcentury Americana, but as he moved from instant to 35mm and medium-format film the conceptual weight of his images grew and sharpened: weathered signs, shuttered storefronts and vacant lots take on a new resonance in light of the Covid-19 lockdown. On long solitary drives through the American South he stopped to wander through small towns, building a body of patient, considered street photography. He shares William Eggleston's eye for colour and light and views the world as a readymade, yet by depicting the human element through omission he aligns himself with William Christenberry and the New Topographics, adding a twilight sense of having-been. Turning a verb into a noun for the title, he distils the act of seeing, making pictures that depict perception itself alongside their subjects, in a country defined by the tension between the vestigial and the vanished.
