A limited supplement volume to Tim Coghlan's 2018 book Hell's Gates, Notre Damned, An Act of God directs his strategic Google Images searches to photographs of the blaze that felled Notre Dame cathedral in Paris in April 2019. Like the sibling edition, it smirkingly riffs off the visual languages and attitudes of black metal to question the iconography, implications and democracy of images. The book is a concentrated document of a single catastrophic event as mediated through amateur, public domain and press photography.
