Floodplain traces the photographic history of Melbourne's iconic river — the Birrarung (Yarra River) — its floods, infrastructure and geographical significance, and expands on the cultural and environmental implications of our acts of intervention. Published to coincide with James Geurts' exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria, the book includes archival photographs of the Birrarung sourced from State Library Victoria, Museums Victoria and Melbourne Water collections; photographs of Yarra River sites and neon sculptural works at historic points of intervention; and site-specific works on paper at points of river intervention, processed through a reconfigured scanner. The book forms a wider treatise about the mythology of the flood and the fallacies of environmental colonialism.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
