Because of the war Russia began against her native Ukraine in 2014, Katja Petrowskaja felt it was no longer possible to write as she had before. She turned instead to a fragmentary form of writing, each fragment set off by an image taken from the immense stock of clues and traces that photography has made available, and in which, strangely and without our knowing it, our own secrets are held. The result is a sequence of short texts that look at pictures and let the pictures look back.
