Phyllis Christopher's fearless and tender pictures fuse lesbian sex and queer protest against the backdrop of a city in flux. Having moved to San Francisco from her home town of Buffalo in the late 1980s, Christopher began to collaborate with her subjects on images in which documentary and performance converge. The selection brings together fifteen years of work made in the street, the club and the studio, composing a portrait of a community that was defining radical articulations of queer lesbian sexuality while defending its bodily autonomy against right-wing politics, the AIDS crisis and urban gentrification.
