Text by Will Heinrich
A containment system created by local authorities back in the seventeenth century to battle one of the most devastating pandemics since the Black Death. A number of these grim relics exist today and can be seen throughout many parts of Great Britain: at the time, vinegar and urine were thought to cleanse objects of the contagion, and direct contact with those being isolated was forbidden, making sales transactions almost impossible, so hollowed-out rocks filled with vinegar were used to mitigate the danger, enabling the exchange of goods and money to flow freely between infected and non-infected communities. Intrigued by the sombre beauty of these historical artifacts, all remaining examples known to exist were documented. Cut out, isolated, and centred on graduated black and white backgrounds, the full set of twenty-two are presented with an identifiable, straight-up flair for the uncanny, accompanied by a wonderful evocative text.
