Eight poems by Beart Oosterhaven, translated by Geart fan der Mear

A term that lends itself to countless associations and expectations: there is no single, clear-cut definition of the terrain, which makes it such a good starting point for questions about the dynamics of cultural centres, the views of institutions and the evolution of culture in a natural environment. Who actually owned the terrain, who created it, who determined its cultural rhythm? A micro study explores cultural centres and this ownership and belonging, taking a journey through a region in the north of the Netherlands guided by philosophical and postcolonial theory. One essay takes a filmic journey through a village, interpreting and uncovering secrets by sifting through an album of photographs from 1978 and delving into archives. A companion visual essay is a collation of recent photographs, images taken by local residents, poetry, information about the land, and a grass herbarium, presenting the terrain from the perspective of the local dweller.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
