IT’S A PHOTOGUIDE IT’S A PHOTOBOOK IT’S A PLEASURE IT’S A NEED IT’S PRIVATE IT’S PUBLIC IT’S POLITICAL IT’S CUTE IT’S SOFT IT’S HARD FACTS IT’S EVERYDAY IT’S FOR EVERYONE IT’S BEAUTIFUL IT’S HARDCORE »Balance Studies. Photography for Everyone« is a conceptual photobook based on the typoskript of Lucia Moholy´s book outline from 1933. Suddenly forced to emigrate, however, she was never able to complete it. Caroline Heider explicitly follows the long tradition of guides in which photographers are advised to master not only the camera and light, but above all composition, i.e. they are to learn how to see. At the same time, as a female writer she breaks away from tradition, as this particular species of instructive literature is authored with a male gaze.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
