Photographs of the Nazi concentration and extermination camps, 1933-1999, and a history of how they were shown. In the immediate post-war period the spontaneous reaction was to show the images without any precaution or reflection, as if they justified themselves and were enough to tell what had happened. This period of "pedagogy through horror" was followed in later years by one governed by the need for reconciliation with Germany. Clément Chéroux and the historians he worked with for many years propose a definitive arrangement of the documents now available, many unpublished, and ask why the images that already existed in 1944 were for the most part neither published nor consciously examined. "Everything was there, in a latent state. But to change the course of history one would have had to want to see and know how to see." Photographs by, among others, Erwin Blumenfeld, Christian Boltanski, Margaret Bourke-White, Germaine Krull, Michael Kenna, David Levinthal, Lee Miller, George Rodger and Dirk Reinartz, with photographic documents from German, American, British, French, Polish and Russian historical archives.
