Julia Soboleva (b. 1990, Latvia; Russian minority family; based Manchester) paints on top of found photographs sourced from Manchester flea markets and charity shops. Strange creatures dominate, performing what look like weird experiments with dated technology or human bodies. A mix of photography, painting, and collage, the book is a research on fear and madness. The book's only text is a closing quote from Frank Herbert's Dune: 'I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.'

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
