Anna Cabrera and Ángel Albarrán are among the most inventive and widely recognised photographers of their generation. Fenêtres sur l'insolite is the second book in a trilogy begun with the best-selling Remembering the Future, in which they work on the complexities of form and narration in photography. This one is about the tension between what is visible and what is unexpected: it asks the viewer to question what they are looking at and to find what hides beyond the picture. Taking its title from an essay by Julio Cortázar, the book looks at how the unexpected turns up in a photograph without warning, unsettling the conventional reading of reality. The unexpected is not manufactured but revealed, and photography becomes a space open to several interpretations, where the extraordinary is hidden inside the ordinary. Albarrán and Cabrera are known for their command of platinum, palladium, cyanotype and gelatin silver processes, and for the way they have pushed colour printing with pigments, Japanese paper and gold leaf. Their work has been shown in Spain, Japan, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Lebanon, Italy and the United States, and is held by private collections and by institutions such as Hermès, the Goetz Collection, the German Bundestag Art Collection and Banco Santander.
