The arrival of the artselfie in 2012 brought two powerful things together: art and the new habit that goes by the name of the selfie. The hashtag was pushed by the New York collective DIS, and what gathered under it is here.

Selfies taken in front of works of art let us return to old questions: if art is a mirror, what happens when I set another mirror against it and put myself in between? And they raise a new one about how a picture is made now, when the old path — from the one who shoots, through a device, to a subject — is shaken, and with it the nature of the images and the way we take them in.

“Selfies are mirrors we can freeze. They allow us to see how others look at themselves in a mirror, making their modelling face when nobody's around — except these days, everybody's around everywhere all the time.” — Douglas Coupland

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
