“Conquistador” is a photographic project inspired by the archives of Louis de Boccard (1866-1956), a Swiss man exiled in Argentina at the end of the 1880’s.

Nicolas Savary, a swiss photographer, fortuitously came into possession of the archive as part of a research project during an artistic residency in South America in 2014.

Savary propose a contemporary approach with reference to the archive. Examination of the documents reveals that certain themes are linked to contemporary issues like ecology and the tourist industry, urban development and the situation of indigenous people.

The book include reprints and facsimiles of archive images and original documents as well as ethnographic and heritage objects.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
