Stillman, Photography and Cinema in Mexico is the first publication to explore the work of the so-called stills photographers , discreet professionals who move through studios and locations capturing the images that document and promote each film. Based on more than a decade of research, this book invites reflection on the influences, connections, and separations between cinema and photography through the work of camera artists such as Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Pierre Verger, Rodrigo Moya, Lourdes Grobet, and Graciela Iturbide, among many others, while also incorporating into the history of Mexican photography the names of extraordinary photographers who dedicated their lives to working on film sets. These images, created collectively with other professionals—cinematographers, directors, actors, costume designers, and production designers—have enriched Mexico’s art and visual culture for more than a century.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
