Two thousand and fifty-six kilometres, three hundred and sixty villagers, countless apples and a farewell. Since 2011 Zhang Xiao has shifted all his work to the home town he knows best, a place closely bound to his growth and his memory. At the beginning he made a series through polaroid emulsion lifts, a metaphor for the process of tearing and repairing himself and the place, and through those collaged images he looked for a balance between memory and reality. At that time he was more like a wandering child in the village, aimlessly looking for its ruins; he emptied the old drawers of the family house and rummaged through what was there.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
