Zürich, Sommer 1980 deals with barriers, barricades, police in combat uniforms, demonstrators, rubber bullets, water cannons and, again and again, much tear gas. Thirty years ago a kind of war reigned on Zürich's streets. The clashes between establishment and the alternative scene in public space unfolded with a vehemence and readiness for violence unimaginable today. Unlike 1968, the anarchist-leaning Zürich youth revolt of 1980 was an avant-garde spectacle and made international headlines. The young people's only tangible demand was for an autonomous youth centre (AJZ); essentially, however, they simply wanted everything, and at once — with a deliberately absurd maximal demand, dadaist wit and a subversive camouflage.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
