Over the last twenty years the Basel photographer Nicole Zachmann has intensively engaged with portrait photography. In the mid-1980s she photographed protagonists of the subcultural Basel music and art scene from her extended circle of acquaintances and friends — some of whom have since achieved national and international fame and are now gathered in Fish of Hope. The post-punk settings of that cultural transit epoch encompassed rehearsal cellars, backyards, music studios and squatted apartments, above all in Basel but also in Zürich and Munich.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
