The Weststrasse in Zürich: once a central transit axis, today a residential street with a 30 km/h limit. For more than 30 years all north-south traffic was funnelled through the narrow Weststrasse in District 3. With the opening of the western bypass in 2009 the neighbourhood was freed from through traffic; the Weststrasse shed its nickname “the nation's exhaust pipe” and now exists as an encounter zone for cycling and strolling. Zürich photographer Corina Flühmann has documented this transformation since 2007. Weststrasse is neither a sober long-term documentation nor a colourful street photobook, but a precise depiction of Zürich socio-demography. Men, women, children, young and old, Swiss and people of foreign origin are portrayed in their living and working environment in the neighbourhood. Renovated façades have replaced the old ones and the tenant structure has changed — above all this shows how quickly gentrification took hold. What remained and still marks the streetscape: the Jewish Orthodox community and its synagogue. The book also includes essays by writers Melinda Nadj Abonji and Charles Lewinsky and by architect Caspar Schärer.
