For decades, many young people sought the city's support for an autonomous youth centre, and every proposal was blocked. Then, in 1980, a 60-million-franc credit was approved for the Zürich opera house: the young got nothing, while bourgeois “proper” culture got a big slice. This was the last straw — on 30 May 1980 a demonstration in front of the opera house erupted into riots. From the very beginning, autonomous groups formed that fuelled and carried the “Movement.” Over the first nights and the following weeks, both the protests and the police repression grew ever stronger. Zürcher Bewegung, Band 32 appeared in 1981 from the Verlag ohne Zukunft and forms a photographic chronology of the Zürich unrest of 1980. Raw, immediate picture layouts alternate with tabloid headlines, sometimes as facsimiled newspaper clippings, sometimes via quotations from Swiss politicians and police officials that fragmentarily comment on the documentary photographs. Initiated by Fredy Meier on the 40th anniversary of the so-called opera-house riots, Edition Patrick Frey reissues this very first book publication of the Zürich Movement as a facsimile.
