Notebooks 2005–2018 by the Swiss artist Aldo Schmid is a drawn and painted compendium of ten facsimiled Moleskine sketchbooks. In the visual worlds created between 2005 and 2018, one moves through the abandoned halls and emptied codes of modernity, bleak industrial plants, obscure postcard idylls, or the memory-space of a press photograph. One encounters grotesque officials, masked beings with contorted grimaces, and dim-witted robot and comic figures. As varied as the paintings and drawings — meandering between figuration and abstraction — are the styles and techniques the artist employs. Obsessively dense surreal drawings of urban motifs in felt-tip, coloured pencil and silver marker give way to watercolours of elegiac landscapes: retro-futurist steampunk beside heimat painting. The lake is as recurrent a pictorial topos as the mushroom cloud mirrored in the water. This limited edition comprises ten facsimiled Moleskine books printed with additional colours in a slipcase.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
