Contrary to widespread belief, the primary aim of artistic effort is no longer to better formulate our questions about the real world, but to act upon it more effectively. As early as 1957, Debord called for an ordered intervention upon the complex factors of two great components in perpetual interaction: the material setting of life and the behaviours it gives rise to and which overturn it. It is not a question of intelligence but of how to insert oneself into the context that is ours, and of strategies suited to envisaging one's own destiny. To be, to love, to think, to suffer are no longer enough. Awareness of the extreme possibilities of existence comes through the constraint of real ordeals. To photograph in order to push back the physical limits of existence, to master the world in the mode of absorption and contamination.
