Spazio Calmo investigates the social and artistic significance of the contemporary electronic and experimental music scene through the spaces that host it.

The photographic project, accompanied by four critical essays, recounts a number of architectures on the Italian territory whose function and use have changed over time precisely through the transformative impact of music.

Photographs by Gabriele Daccardi, Antonio La Grotta, Stefano Mattea.

Texts:

Do you remember the first time? by Claudia D’Alonzo

Per un parlamento dei luoghi. Le scenografie bastarde di Spazio calmo by Enrico Petrilli

I luoghi della messa in scena nell’inquieta relazione tra architettura e club culture by Elisabetta Donati de Conti

R.I.P. club culture by Valerio Mattioli

The represented locations are situated in both urban and natural contexts and explore their anthropization. The book includes images of the Lingotto, the Officine Grandi Riparazioni, and the Venaria Reale during events of Club to Club, as well as the independent venue Cripta747 in Turin on the day of Howie Lee’s live set; Villa Arconati in the Milan metropolitan area, home to the festival Terraforma; the island of Ortigia, where Ortigia Sound System takes place; the quarry La Beola at the Nextones festival in Val d’Ossola; and Macao in Milan on the day of the Nurse With Wound concert.

Curated by Supersento: Ilaria Benini and Marilivia Minnici.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
